Solar and Battery Installations Across Scotland

Scottish Energy Efficiency is based in Dundee, and we arrange surveys and quotes across the length and breadth of Scotland. Whether you are in a tenement flat in Edinburgh with a compact roof, a detached home in Glasgow with a garden hot tub, or a rural property in the Highlands with a wellness cabin, we can assess your home for solar PV and battery storage.

Scotland is a remarkably good location for solar. While winter days are short, the long summer daylight hours — particularly in the north — give solar panels an extended generation window. The key to making solar work year-round for wellness equipment is battery storage: capturing the surplus from long summer days and storing it for evening sauna sessions or early morning hot tub soaks.

Why Location Matters

Your location affects your solar system in three ways. First, daylight hours — a property in Inverness gets more summer generation hours than one in Dumfries, but fewer in winter. Second, roof orientation and shading — nearby hills, buildings and trees all affect how much light reaches your panels. Third, installer access — we need to be able to reach you for the survey and for the installation team to access your property with equipment.

The survey accounts for all of these. That is why we do not quote without seeing your property — a system that works perfectly on a south-facing roof in Aberdeen might need a different approach on an east-west roof in a shaded Glasgow street. The survey is how we get this right.

Dundee is our base — we know Tayside well. From city installations to rural Angus properties with space for larger arrays.

Stirling & Central

Stirling, Falkirk, Clackmannanshire, Alloa, Grangemouth

Central Scotland's corridor with a mix of historic towns and newer developments suitable for roof and ground-mount systems.

Aberdeen & Grampian

Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Stonehaven, Ellon, Inverurie, Peterhead, Banff

The northeast has excellent summer daylight and clear horizons. We cover the city and shire for surveys and quotes.

The Highlands have some of the UK's longest summer daylight hours. We arrange surveys across the mainland Highlands.

Argyll & Bute

Oban, Helensburgh, Dunoon, Lochgilphead, Campbeltown, Arran, Bute, Mull

Coastal and island locations with good solar potential. We cover accessible islands — call to confirm your specific location.

Scottish Borders

Galashiels, Hawick, Peebles, Kelso, Jedburgh, Selkirk, Duns

Rural Borders properties often have excellent roof and ground space for larger solar arrays powering wellness setups.

Dumfries & Galloway

Dumfries, Stranraer, Kirkcudbright, Newton Stewart, Annan, Lockerbie

Southwest Scotland with good solar irradiance and rural properties suited to bigger systems for hot tubs and saunas.

Ayrshire & Arran

Coastal Ayrshire and the Isle of Arran — good daylight and a mix of town and rural properties for solar and battery.

Orkney & Shetland

Kirkwall, Stromness, Lerwick, mainland Orkney

Northern Isles with exceptional summer daylight. We can arrange surveys on the Orkney mainland — call to discuss Shetland.

Scotland's Solar Potential by Region

It surprises many people that Scotland is a viable location for solar PV. In fact, solar panels work on daylight, not direct sunshine, and they generate electricity even on overcast days — something Scotland has in abundance. The key regional differences are about daylight hours and weather patterns, not whether solar works at all.

The North and Highlands

The Highlands, Orkney and Shetland have extraordinary summer daylight. In June, Inverness sees around 18 hours of daylight and Kirkwall nearly 19. This means solar panels generate for far longer each day than in southern England. The trade-off is short winter days, which is why battery storage and a correctly sized system are essential — you need to capture and store enough during the long summer days to offset winter shortages.

Central Belt

The Central Belt — Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Fife — has a balanced solar profile. Good summer generation, reasonable winter generation, and a high density of properties means we can arrange surveys quickly. The mix of urban and suburban housing means we see everything from small roof-mounted systems to larger arrays on detached homes with space for hot tubs and saunas.

South and Borders

The Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway benefit from slightly milder weather and marginally more winter daylight than the north. Rural properties in these areas often have larger roofs and gardens, making them ideal for bigger solar arrays and ground-mounted battery storage powering garden wellness cabins.

West Coast and Islands

Argyll, Ayrshire and the accessible islands have a maritime climate with variable weather. Solar panels still generate well on cloudy days, and the clear horizons on the coast can mean excellent morning or evening generation. For island properties, we can arrange surveys on Arran, Bute, Mull and the Orkney mainland — call to confirm for other islands.

Arranging Your Survey

Wherever you are in Scotland, the process is the same. Use the quote form to tell us your postcode and what you want to power, or call us on 0141 230 0198. We will confirm coverage and arrange a no-obligation survey at a time that suits you. After the survey, you receive a written quote for a system designed for your property — with no pressure to proceed.

Frequently Asked Questions
